Daytime naps (HLD 406)

19 May 2021

I really really need to have a daytime nap. I’m 2 years old, and I can’t last a full day without recharging my batteries. I’ve been awake since really early, eaten three breakfasts, two morning snacks, and lunch. I’ve been to the park, played on swings and slides, climbed on frames and ropes, and watched diggers move rocks from one pile into another pile. I’ve done drawing, I’ve played with play dough. I’ve blown bubbles and chased them around the yard with a fly swat, trying to smash them. I did a big poo in the potty. I’ve loaded things in and out of the rubbish trucks, built things with duplo, and helped Grandma make my lunch in the kitchen. I’ve played with the brand new ambulance toy, and even though I’m really quite tired, I’m not ready to sleep yet.

I really really need to have a daytime nap. I’m 57 years old, and I could possibly last a full day without recharging my batteries, but it wouldn’t be pleasant. I’ve been awake since some ungodly hour, walked the dog, eaten half of my breakfast, drank one cup of tea and two cups of coffee, and eaten leftover toddler food for lunch. I’ve been to the park, pushed a toddler on the swings and supervised the climb for the slides, stood ready to catch a falling toddler who was adamant he could climb on frames and ropes, and desperately talked nonstop about diggers moving rocks from one pile into another pile. I’ve done drawing, I’ve played with play dough. I’ve blown bubbles and chased them around the yard with a fly swat, trying to smash them. I’ve dealt with a big potty poo. I’ve loaded things in and out of the rubbish trucks, built things with duplo, and had assistance in the kitchen while making sandwiches. I excitedly welcomed the delivery of the new ambulance toy, until I realised that this toy would take precedence over all things that normally happen in this toddlers day….. like sleep.

When does the need for a nap disappear, and the desire for a nap take over?

Although, to be honest, I could probably get away without an actual nap. A pleasant half an hour in the rocking chair with no ambulance sounds coming from the toddler sleep area, would be sufficient.
